Parish Scripture Series

December 7, 2017

Did you know when the Bible was written? Who it was written for? Why it was written and how it was written? How did you read the Bible?

As Catholics, we mostly are aware of stories from the Bible from Sunday Mass.  We leave the interpreting of the Gospels to the Priests.  We are not Bible readers like the Lutherans or other denominations.
It was therefore not a surprise that in the last survey by our Parish, most people wanted an opportunity to learn more about our Faith by reading the Bible. How should we read the Bible?

On 9th and 23rd November, Dr Rose Marie Prosser, lecturer at the College of Divinity, gave a talk on how to read and interpret the Bible in its historic context. This was part of our Parish Council’s Adult Learning Series on Scripture.  The engaging presentation attracted a large number of parishioners who enthusiastically shared their experiences in how they read the bible.

I found it very interesting and an eye opener.  It gave me a good insight as to how I should ‘approach’ reading the bible. The bible is a special book that needs to be read in a special way. It is not to be interpreted literally and carelessly.

When was the last time you read the Bible?
If you want to know more about reading this very special Book, the Bible, join us on this journey when Dr Rose Marie Prosser returns in February 2018 for another four part series about Scriptures.
